There is no single action that can increase engagement better than a well done push notification. It is as likely to get the attention of a user as a text message from their Mother. But of course, with great power comes great responsibility. In this article we will go over how to send out a push notification on Unreel powered iOS and Android apps, and cover best practices to use them effectively.
Sending a Push Notification
1. Select 'Push Notification' in the 'Platforms' drop down from the Admin Dashboard.
2. Select '+ Send Push Notification'
3. Preparing your Push Notification
From here, you can set-
The platform: Select if the notification goes to IOS users, ANDROID users or both.
Message: The text your users will see when receiving the notification.
When: The date and time the notification goes out.
Select a video: Here you can choose a specific video to open and auto play when the user clicks the notification. If left blank, the notification will just direct the user to the discover section of you app.
Since a Push Notification is a direct alert to users, it is extremely effective at getting their attention. This also means it is easy to get their attention and remind them that they never use the app or they hate notifications and delete it. Although losing users who realize they never use the app is not the worst thing, losing users because you annoyed them is a recipe for disaster for your streaming service. Here is some simple advice to follow when sending a notification:
1. Promote specific new content:
Users won't mind Push Notifications if they are promoting something they want to watch. The most effective notifications are ones that link to a specific piece of new content that will be appealing to the majority of your audience.
2. Start Slow:
Begin with one Push Notification ever week or two. Check the analytics, and make sure the notification is receiving engagement and not leading to a spike in uninstalls. If they are performing well, you can begin to experiment with more frequent notifications.
